The benefits of pediatric aquatic therapy

There are any number of reasons why a child might need physical therapy, from ongoing treatment for a condition such as cerebral palsy or autism, to shorter-term therapy to recover from an illness or injury. And, just like with adults, therapy - while beneficial - can become tiresome and monotonous. For therapists, it can be challenging to get children, who have shorter attention spans, to stay focused during therapy sessions and complete their treatments. But aquatic therapy presents something … different. First of all, most children find it fun. Plus, the warm water of the hot tub or swim spa helps relieve pain and pressure the child might be feeling, making the therapy session more comfortable. The water is soothing and relaxing, too, so it’s easier for the therapist to work with the child during the therapy session. Warm water aquatic therapy can work for a child of most any size or stature. Since their discomfort and pain are reduced, they can become engaged in their therapy, getting the most possible benefit from it. Often, therapy becomes something to look forward to.
