Hot tub cover looking a little worn? Watch out.
Your hot tub cover is probably the most important, and yet the most underappreciated, part of your spa. Let’s be honest - it’s not all that pretty. It’s a little bulky. If you don’t have a cover lifter, it can be kind of difficult to move around. It’s just not something you spend a lot of time thinking about, really. But woe unto you. Your cover keeps dirt and debris OUT of your hot tub, and it keeps the warmth IN. Just try to imagine your hot tub without it. With proper care, your hot tub cover will last for a long time. But, after years of normal use and exposure to the elements, you’re going to need to replace it. You’ll know it’s time for a new cover when:
- the cover is sagging in the middle, instead of lying flat
- the vinyl is punctured, torn or cracked
- the cover has grown heavier over time (That means it’s retaining water because the vapor barrier has degraded.)
- it smells moldy or musty. (Mold may be growing inside the foam core.)

Here’s what to look for in your new cover:
- Durability - you want marine-grade vinyl and heavy-duty stitching that can stand up to the weather and being moved off and on your hot tub frequently.
- Fit - if the cover doesn’t fit your hot tub properly, it isn’t going to do you a lot of good. A cover designed to fit your spa will create a tight seal so no heat escapes.
- Straps and Locks - a cover with sturdy straps will keep your cover in place even when the wind is howling, and safety locks will keep children - or anyone who doesn’t have permission - from accessing your hot tub when you don’t want them to.
Sure, there are ways to buy inexpensive off-brand covers online. But is that a risk you want to take with such an important component?
